Residency is a stage of graduate medical training. Residents hold a medical degree and practice medicine under the indirect supervision of an attending physician, and successful completion of a residency program is a requirement to obtaining a medical license.

“It is a great honor to be a part of the residency program at Suburban Community Hospital.  Our programs focus on education and are integral to decreasing health disparities by providing more medical care to the community.  We are very excited to continue to serve the community for years to come,” said Teresa D. Robinson, MSEd, Administrative Director and Designated Institutional Official over Lower Bucks Hospital and Suburban Community Hospitals’ residency programs. “As the Program Director, I have had the privilege of working with the residents from their first day through graduation, getting a first-hand seat to the talented doctors they have become.”

She added, “Today is a celebration of your hard work and commitment to your patients and the community.  But, it’s also a great reminder of how by working together, we can truly change people’s lives.”

The residency program offers a learning environment across several settings, including hospital, ambulatory, emergency, and various specialty rotations. The rotations include training with community physicians specializing in pediatrics, behavioral health, wound care, podiatry, cardiology, geriatrics, dermatology, gynecology, obstetrics, general surgery, orthopedics, nephrology, urology, and pulmonology.

“You are leaving Suburban Community Hospital today having made countless memories together,” says Mathew Mathew, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Internal Medicine Program Director at Suburban Community Hospital, who spoke at the ceremony. “You’ve worked long hours and had to endure countless sleepless nights, all while not seeing your loved ones. But you made it! You are now officially graduates, and that’s something to be proud of.”

Medical residency training is required to practice as a physician in the U.S. and begins after graduation from medical school.

Each year, residents seek a graduate medical education program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education; and after completion of a qualifying residency program, physicians are eligible to take an exam to become board-certified in the program specialty.

During this time, the residency staff reviews hundreds of applications for the limited number of spots.  After interviews, the residency program and applicants submit their ranking of preference to The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The NRMP’s computerized mathematical algorithm matches applicants’ preferences with the selected programs for training positions available at teaching hospitals nationwide. The matches are announced on Match Day – the third Friday in March.

The Suburban Community Hospitals Residency program is comprised of Osteopathic and Allopathic physicians. Throughout the years, the hospital has been involved in training residents from universities in the Philadelphia region. On the educational side, residents benefit from exposure to a large, diverse patient population with a wide spectrum of disease states and clinical-social scenarios in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
